Sunset Strip, Hollywood, Los Angeles, 10 horas da noite, 13 de fevereiro de 1976. Num bucólico conjunto residencial ouve-se um pedido desesperado de socorro: “Por favor, me ajudem, Estou morrendo!” Um vizinho desce as escadas para acudi-lo. Tenta salva-lo aplicando-lhe respiração boca a boca. Em vão. O ator Sal Mineo, aos 37 anos, revelado para o mundo ao interpretar o personagem Platô em Juventude Transviada / Rebel Without a Cause, de Nicholas Ray, estava morto. Era o capítulo final de uma vida nada fácil. Homossexual sempre em conflito com sua sexualidade, Sal Mineo viveu uma grande paixão (não correspondida) por James Dean (com que trabalhou em Juventude Transviada e Assim Caminha a Humanidade / Giant, de George Stevens. O ator nascido em 10/01/1939 jamis se recuperou do golpe de ser rejeitado e passou o resta da vida procurando rapazes loiros (parecidos com Dean) pelas ruas escuras de Los Angeles. Um deles o matou a sangue frio (segundo testemunhas, um homem alto e loiro foi visto fugindo da cena do crime).
Na época de sua morte, a carreira de Sal Mineo (que teve inesquecível
atuação em Exodus / Exodus, de Otto Preminger) já estava em plena decadência.
Limitava-se a fazer pequenas aparições em peças malsucedidas. Ao
morrer, ensaiava o espetáculo Os. Your
Cat Is Dead. A infância de Sal Mineo não foi exatamente tranqüila. Filho de um casal de imigrantes sicilianos, passou os primeiros anos de sua vida no Bronx, bairro barra-pesada de Nova York. Tornou-se um garoto arredio, tímido em excesso e eventualmente violente. Levou essas marcas pessoais para os personagens que representou no cinema: adolescentes problemáticos, em conflitos com a família e a sociedade. Viveu tantos personagens com essas características que se cansou deles: “Sempre apareci em meus filmes com uma arma na mão. Nunca me deram um papel de bonzinho. E às vezes eu queria ser igualzinho ao Pat Boone, o queridinho das meninas bobinhas!”. Nunca alcançou seu sonho. Fora dos ambientes de filmagem, era um homem absolutamente solitário. Viveu assim até morrer (e quando isso ocorreu as meninas bobinhas do planeta não verteram nenhuma lágrima). |
