| Era um técnico perfeito, sabia tudo sobre cinema, tudo sobre montagens. Não tinha pressa em acabar os filmes, nem tinha gênero preferido. Era bom em tudo, musicais com Fred Astaire e Ginger Rogers, faroestes (Os Brutos também Amam) e nunca nenhum ator deu uma má interpretação numa fita sua. Todas as estrela o adoravam e trabalharam com ele mais de uma vez, Elizabeth Taylor, Katherine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Irene Dunne, Joan Fontaine, Jean Arthur. Nem sempre acertava, sua vida de Cristo, A Maior História de Todos os Tempos levou tanto tempo para ser rodade que precisou ajuda de amigos (David Lean, por exemplo, dirigiu sem crédito as cenas com Claude Rains). Embora tenha caído um pouco de moda nos últimos anos, algumas fitas suas beiram à perfeição. Sua chance veio em 1935, quando Katherine Hepburn o aceitou como diretor de Alice Adams. Durante a guerra, trabalhou como coronel, cobrindo as ações do 6º Exército. Em 1945, fundou a Liberty Films com Capra, Wyler e Briskin, um desastre financeiro quando pretenderam produzir fitas com "mensagem".
